Ask: “If you were going to study a certain subject, would you be more interested solely in the facts and their application for the now, or would you be more interested in the ideas and relationships between the facts and their application for the future?”

What Does the Answer Tell Me?

It tells you if a person is a so called Intuitor, interested primarily in the future and the possibilities it offers, or a Sensor interested in the first place in the concrete as opposed to the abstract, relying on facts and more interested in experiencing the “Now”.

Intuitors are so much into possibilities that they may disregard sensory data coming in right now, to the point that they may fail to notice what is going on in the now and that they should be taking action in response to events around them. They are interested in the big picture as opposed to the specific details. A CEO of a company would have to be more of an Intuitor – a big picture thinker interested in the future, rather than being tied up in all the details. 25% of the population are Intuitors.

Sensors think they are realistic and “down to earth”. They can be quick decision makers and they are respond well to events that are going on around them. Often energetic and active, Sensors want stimulating experiences in the now. 75% of the population are Sensors.

Why is this Question So Useful?

It shows you:

  • When hiring people for certain roles: what kind of person will be best suited for the role you’re hiring for?
  • When you want someone to be really listening to what you are telling them: will they be more interested in the possibilities and the future application of what you are telling them, or will they be interested in details and how they will impact what’s happening right now? Tailor your message accordingly and you’ll have a much more attentive listener.
  • When you’re giving presentations and trainings you will have a more captive audience if you provide for both the Sensors and the Intuitors in the audience.
